Selecting a Omaha Mover

Critical questions to ask any moving company:

Choosing a moving company is a major decision. Learn as much as possible about a company’s services and costs to be comfortable and confident with the final selection. It is also wise to check with your state’s moving and storage association to learn state and local regulations that apply to area companies. Consider asking potential moving companies these important questions so you can make the best decision:

  • Are you licensed? Moving companies or person(s) offering full moving services in the state of Nebraska must have authority through the Nebraska Public Service Commission.
  • Do you employ day labor?
  • How do you charge? All local Residential (non-Commercial/Business) moves must be charged at an hourly rate. This rate must be registered with the NPSC.
  • What is your minimum charge?
  • Are there additional charges for:
    • Extra flights of stairs?  No extra charge is allowed for local Residential moves.
    • Extra large items?  No extra charge is allowed for local Residential moves.
    • Travel time from your location to mine?  All companies must charge from the time they leave their location until they return to their location. Applies to local Residential moves.
    • Evenings and weekends? Local Residential moves must remain at their pre-registered rates during their normal business hours.
  • What payment options are available?
  • Is a deposit required?
  • Does your company provide worker’s compensation insurance?
  • How do you train your team?
  • How are my belongings protected?
  • Do you offer free estimates?
  • What is your cancellation policy?

Additional information regarding local Residential moves:

(Local Residential includes the following areas: Omaha, Council Bluffs, Carter Lake, Ralston, Papillion, Bellevue, Bennington, Elkhorn, Fort Calhoun, LaVista, Gretna, Valley and Waterloo.)

  • Moving companies are not allowed to discount from their pre-registered hourly rates for any reason, whether as a Senior Citizens discount or a Cash-payment discount.
  • Moving companies are not allowed to “beat” their competitors written estimates. They must charge actual time spent on the move, to include drive time, at the pre-registered hourly rate.
  • Currently, the lowest legal hourly rate for the Omaha area is $25.00 per person and $25.00 per vehicle. Any company or persons charging less than this is not a legal moving company.
  • Moving companies must charge a fuel fee (the rate is set by the NPSC) for every move performed. It is a one-time fee per move, not charged by the mile or by the hour.
  • All legal moving companies will have an “M” number and a D.O.T. number.
  • If an unregistered “company” performs your move, and they are stopped by the D.O.T. or NPSC, your belongings can and will be impounded!
  • Any moving company not having workers compensation insurance makes YOU liable for any injury to the movers.
  • If you are unsure about the company you are looking to hire, you can check with the Better Business Bureau (402-391-7612), as well as the NPSC (402-471-3101)
